Madame Verity Ghost - Séance of 1892

On the fourteenth of October 1892, five people gathered in the parlour of Duskhallow House on the edge of the Yorkshire moors to hold a séance. By midnight the room was empty. No explanation was ever found.

Madame Verity was the only one who knew, before the candles went out, exactly what was coming.

Cornelius Verity had given four hundred and one séances before the night of October the fourteenth, 1892. She had faked every single one. She was extraordinarily good at it.

But in 1887, at a house in Leeds, the glass had moved before she touched it. She'd ended the séance immediately, packed her bags before midnight and left the city without explanation. She spent five years telling herself she'd imagined it. She accepted the Duskhallow invitation because the money was good, and because some part of her she refused to examine closely needed to know if it would happen again.

The candle went out before she'd even set it on the table.

She knew then.

What happened next was her fault. All of it. She scattered something that night that was meant only for her, and four people paid for thirty years of her carelessness in a single moment. She has been trying to make amends ever since. Straightening your pictures, tidying your shelves, quietly and anxiously setting right what she can.

It isn't enough. She knows it isn't enough.

She keeps trying anyway.

Madame Verity is a hand cast solid pewter ghost figurine, individually sand cast and finished by hand in my home workshop in Yorkshire. She is depicted holding a candle, the last thing she carried into the parlour at Duskhallow House that night. Each piece carries the natural texture and character of the sand casting process — no two are exactly alike.
